The Walking Festival has been cancelled this year 2007. Further information will be available in the new year regarding the 2008 event. Below, you can read about the program enjoyed by our walkers in 2005! Allow us to introduce you to the delights of Fingal in the Fingal Walking Festival on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of October 2005 THE PROGRAMMEFingal’s landscape, its peninsulas, beaches, cliff and coastal tracks along with its country bohereens, river valleys and estuaries offer a quiet sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Fingal life. All aspects of Fingal’s landscape are featured in the four walks of the Fingal Walking Festival. The festival programme includes easy and moderately strenuous walks over the two days and will follow a number of attractive routes through the countryside between Rush, Skerries and Balbriggan. The walks have also been designed to meet the demands of those interested in heritage, wildlife and landscape along the way. Day 1 – Saturday 1st October Walkers will take to the countryside north of Skerries. The 14km walk takes in Shady Lane and Ardgillan Demesne, with its stunning walled gardens and castle, before crossing the ‘Lady’s Stairs’ to the beautiful coastal route back to Skerries. The 25km walk will also take in Shady lane and the outskirts of Ardgillan Demesne before heading north visiting a number of heritage sites and places of interest en route to the Delvin River north of Balbriggan. The walk then turns to Balbriggan Harbour and south along the stunning piece of coastline between Balbriggan and Skerries with its panoramic views of the islands (Rockabill Lighthouse, Colt, Church, Shenick and Lambay Islands) and the Cooley and Mourne mountains..
Day Two – Sunday 2nd October Walks will explore the landscape to the south of Skerries. The 14km Baldongan Walk meanders along country lanes from Skerries to Baldongan Castle then heads to the historical village of Lusk and back to Skerries Mills. The 25km Rush Walk proceeds along the coastal route from Skerries past Loughshinny and Rush harbours before touching on Rogerstown Estuary, a renowned natural habitat for a wide variety of fauna and wildfowl. Having taken in this wonderful place the walk heads cross country to Lusk and Skerries. WHO GUIDES THE WALKS? The walks are led by guides from the Fingal Walking Club and local historians who will be more than happy to fill you in on the many and varied landmarks along the way. For the more independently minded walker participants will be issued with a map of the routes, while the routes themselves will be clearly marked with directional signs. Information
